Curiosidades da Etimologia - parte 2: Trabalho
O significado da palavra trabalho remonta à sua origem latina: tripalium (três paus) - instrumento utilizado para subjugar os animais e forçar os escravos a aumentar a produção.
O tripalium era, pois, um instrumento de tortura, algo semelhante à cruz que o rebanho cristão adotou como objeto-símbolo de um culto masoquista.
Vão-se os objetos, ficam as palavras: por volta do séc. 12, o termo já tinha ingressado nas línguas românicas - traball, traballo e trabalho (Port.), travail (Fr.), trebajo, trabajo (Esp.), travaglio (It.).
Embora na França rural, até hoje, travail ainda sirva para designar uma variante do tripalium - uma estrutura de madeira destinada a imobilizar o cavalo para trocar ferraduras ou efetuar pequenas intervenções cirúrgicas-, em todas essas línguas o termo entrou como substantivo abstrato, significando "tormento, agonia, sofrimento".
